Discover the Spirit of Lewis...

“Machair” is a Gaelic word which describes a unique coastal environment, rich in the flora and fauna of the Hebrides. From this land and the rugged shores of Uig we take our inspiration - blended with pure Lewis water, each spirit is our way of bottling the island we call home.

Please enjoy our quest to capture the spirit of Lewis in a bottle.

Who We Are...

Fàilte… we’re Iain and Laura, co-founders of The Isle of Lewis Gin. With a longstanding passion for distillation, we decided in 2022 to take the plunge and create the Isle of Lewis Gin from our home in fabulous Uig, on the south-west periphery of the island. With Iain having worked for the NHS during the pandemic, we were looking for a better work-life balance that also made it possible to live in the place where family roots run deep.

We love spending time outdoors – kayaking, wild swimming or walking our dog Penny (a wild wee lurcher) in search of new places. Mostly though, we enjoy being with friends and family, whether here on the island or visiting from the mainland.

Our first step was to capture the subtle flavours of the machair at Riof in Uig, which in full bloom inspired the recipe for our original gin. From that beginning has grown our own small distillery by the bay, where we now craft not only Leòdhas Gin but also Camas Ùige Gin and Ròg Rum. Each spirit is a reflection of the land and sea around us – our way of sharing the spirit of Lewis in a bottle.

Where We Are From...

Our family roots are in the Uig area of south-west Lewis with its stunning vistas of mountains, lochs, crofting townships, vast beaches and machair land. To the west lies St Kilda – and America. The village of Mangurstadh has been home to Iain’s family for generations and the Isle of Lewis Gin pays homage to people and place.

We currently reside in Lochcroistean, Uig. With a stunning loch and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, beaches and hills, there is nowhere we would rather be. Stepping out onto our small croft every day is a dream come true; a pleasure and a privilege.

We hope you agree the product is worthy of the place that inspired it.

Where Our Gin Is Made...

Nestled in the heart of Uig, our distillery is a reflection of our passion for crafting exceptional gin on the Isle of Lewis. We carefully produce each batch using the purest Lewis water, sourced from Carloway, just a few miles away. This pristine water, combined with our handcrafted botanical recipe inspired by the island’s unique machair landscape, results in the distinctive character of Leòdhas Gin.

We’re deeply committed to quality, community, and sustainability. As we grow, we aim to expand our range, create local employment, and contribute positively to the wellbeing of our island home.

The incredible support from our community has been the foundation of our journey, and we’re excited about the future and the ways we can give back.

Thank you for being part of our story.

Slàinte,
Iain & Laura x

Bottle of The Isle of Lewis Gin with a glass of gin and tonic on a light background

Perfect Serve

Leòdhas

Serve with a light Fever-Tree tonic or a splash of soda, over plenty of ice, finished with a slice of lemon and a sprig of thyme.

Bright citrus and wild herb notes are lifted beautifully by a lighter mixer, letting the juniper and coastal botanicals shine without overpowering them.

Camas Ùige

Pair with Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic, poured over generous ice and garnished with a fresh slice of orange.

The soft juniper and floral character of the gin is complemented by the richer tonic, while orange rounds out the citrus and deepens the coastal sweetness.

Ròg

Enjoy neat over ice with a slice of lime - or mix with Fever-Tree ginger beer, fresh lime squeezed in, and plenty of ice.

The warm, delicate spice and herbal lift from the botanicals open up beautifully with lime, while ginger brings out the rum’s soft sweetness and freshness.

Our Favourite Cocktail

Isle of Lewis Gin Fizz

A gin fizz should feel like lifted shoulders and sea air - light, bright, and quietly indulgent. This one leans into the softer side of our botanicals: citrus, herbs, and that gentle leafy freshness that runs through the spirit. The egg white gives it a beautiful silken texture and that soft, cloudlike head, but if you’d rather keep it plant-based, aquafaba (the liquid from chickpeas) plays a perfect understudy and delivers the same satisfying foam.

You’ll Need

  • 50ml Isle of Lewis Gin
  • 25ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 15ml sugar syrup (1:1)
  • Egg white (or 20ml aquafaba)
  • Soda water or a light splash of Prosecco to top
  • Ice

Method

  1. Add the gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and egg white (or aquafaba) to a shaker without ice and shake hard - this “dry shake” builds the texture.
  2. Add ice and shake again until the tin is well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled highball or fizz glass and gently top with soda - or Prosecco if you’re feeling celebratory.
  4. Allow the head to rise and settle - that pillowy foam is the hallmark of a good fizz.

Serve Suggestion

Garnish with a fine ribbon of lemon zest expressed over the top, or a small sprig of wild thyme to echo the botanicals. Keep it minimal - a fizz should feel as effortless as a clean horizon.
